I am directed by Earl Curzon of Kedleston to
inform you that on receipt of your letter of the
15th January, with regard to the position of the
British American Tobacco Company Limited under the China (Companies) Amendment Order-in-Council, 1919,
a telegram was sent to His Majesty's Minister at
Peking requesting his observations on this matter.
Copy of this telegram and of Sir John Jordan's reply,
received on the 7th instant are enclosed herewith.
It will be observed that Sir John Jordan con-
siders that the British American Tobacco Company is
the only genuine British company which is likely to
be seriously inconvenienced by the Order, and that
in the case of that firm it is desirable that it
should/
